Foods to Avoid With PCOS in India (And What to Eat Instead)
Maida, sugary chai, packaged namkeen, refined oils — the everyday Indian foods that worsen PCOS insulin resistance, plus a simple desi swap for each one.
You do not need to give up Indian food to manage PCOS. You need to change which Indian foods show up on your plate most days. Below are the biggest offenders in a typical Indian kitchen, and a realistic swap for each.
1. Maida and refined flour
White bread, pav, biscuits, samosa, naan, noodles and rusk spike blood sugar fast, which pushes insulin higher — the exact hormone driving PCOS symptoms.
Swap: whole wheat, jowar, bajra, ragi or a mixed multigrain atta. Try millet recipes for PCOS.
2. Sugar in chai, coffee and "healthy" drinks
Two sugared teas a day is roughly 10 kg of sugar a year. Packaged fruit juice, flavoured yoghurt, health drinks and "no added sugar" biscuits count too.
Swap: unsweetened chai with cinnamon, spearmint tea (studied for androgen reduction), jeera or coriander water.
3. White rice at every meal
Not banned — but a large portion of polished white rice with little protein is a classic insulin spike.
Swap: halve the rice, add a katori of dal or curd and a big sabzi. Hand-pounded, brown or millet rice lowers the glycaemic load further.
4. Deep-fried snacks and reheated oils
Samosa, pakora, bhujia, chips and reheated vanaspati promote the chronic inflammation that worsens PCOS.
Swap: roasted chana, makhana bhuna in ghee, peanuts, air-fried tikki. Cook with cold-pressed mustard, groundnut, sesame oil or ghee.
5. Packaged namkeen, cookies and instant noodles
Ultra-processed, high in refined carbs, palm oil and sodium — plus a false "protein biscuit" health halo.
Swap: sprouts chaat, curd with seeds, boiled egg, moong dal chilla.
6. Sweets and mithai as a daily habit
Festivals are fine. Daily gulab jamun is not. Concentrated sugar plus khoya is the fastest route to an insulin spike.
Swap: dates and nut ladoo (small portion), fruit with peanut butter, dark chocolate 70%+.
7. Excess skimmed and packaged milk
Some women with PCOS see acne improve when they cut down on low-fat dairy and whey-heavy products. Full-fat curd and paneer are usually well tolerated.
Swap: curd, buttermilk, paneer; or unsweetened soya, almond or peanut milk if dairy flares your skin.
8. Alcohol and cola
Both add empty sugar and increase liver fat, which worsens insulin resistance.
Swap: soda with lime, kombucha, plain nimbu paani without sugar.
What to eat instead — the simple rule
Build every meal in this order:
This "protein-fibre-carb" sequencing alone flattens post-meal glucose measurably. Add a 10-minute walk after dinner.
