Why Is My Baby Crying at Night? 9 Real Reasons (India Guide)

Night crying decoded for Indian parents — hunger, gas, overtiredness, sleep regressions, heat and teething. What each cry sounds like, what to try first, and when to call a paediatrician.

Night crying is the single most exhausting part of the newborn months. At 2am, every cry sounds the same — but it usually is not. Most babies have four or five distinct night-cry patterns, and once you can tell them apart, you stop guessing and start responding in under a minute.

If you want a shortcut, record 5 seconds of the cry and run it through our free Baby Cry Analyzer — it listens to pitch, rhythm and pauses and tells you the most likely reason.

1. Hunger (the most common night cry)

Sounds like: rhythmic, repetitive, "neh-neh-neh", starts low and builds. Baby turns their head, sucks their fist, roots on your shoulder.

What to do: feed. Under 3 months, night feeds every 2–3 hours are normal and necessary. Cluster feeding in the evening (7pm–11pm) is also normal and does not mean your supply is low.

2. Gas and colic

Sounds like: sharp, sudden, high-pitched screaming with pauses. Legs pull up to the chest, tummy feels tight, back arches. Often between 6pm and midnight.

What to do: burp for a full 5–10 minutes after every feed, bicycle the legs, warm compress with ajwain potli on the tummy, tummy-down hold across your forearm. Hing (asafoetida) paste applied around — never inside — the navel is a common Indian remedy; use sparingly.

3. Overtiredness

Sounds like: wailing that escalates fast, no pauses, eyes red, fists clenched. Baby fights sleep the harder they need it.

What to do: shorten wake windows. Newborns can only stay awake 45–60 minutes at a time; 3–6 months, 1.5–2 hours. Dark room, white noise, swaddle (until they roll), and start the wind-down before the yawning stage.

4. Too hot or too cold

India-specific and very common. Overwrapping is the number one avoidable cause of night waking in Indian homes. Feel the back of the neck, not the hands or feet — hands are always cooler. Sweaty neck means one layer too many. Room at 24–26°C with a fan on low is comfortable for most babies.

5. Wet or soiled nappy

Sounds like: whiny, on-off, fusses rather than screams. Some babies do not mind at all; others wake instantly.

6. Sleep regressions (4, 8 and 12 months)

Around 4 months, sleep cycles mature and babies start waking fully between cycles. This is developmental, not a habit you created. It typically lasts 2–4 weeks. Keep the routine boringly consistent and it resolves.

7. Teething

Usually 5–7 months onwards. Night crying with drooling, chewing on everything, red gums, mild fussiness during the day. Cold teether, clean-finger gum massage, paediatrician-approved pain relief if needed.

8. Reflux

Crying immediately after lying flat, arching back, frequent spit-ups, better when held upright. Keep baby upright for 20–30 minutes after feeds. Persistent poor weight gain with reflux needs a paediatrician.

9. Needing you

Sometimes it is just contact. Being held regulates a newborn's heart rate, temperature and stress hormones. You cannot spoil a baby under 6 months by responding.

Night-cry triage: what to try, in order

  • Feed (if it has been over 2 hours)
  • Burp thoroughly
  • Check nappy
  • Check temperature — feel the neck
  • Swaddle + white noise + gentle rocking
  • Skin-to-skin
  • Step outside the room for 2 minutes if you feel overwhelmed. A crying baby in a safe cot is safer than an exhausted parent.
  • When night crying needs a doctor

Call your paediatrician the same day if there is fever above 100.4°F under 3 months, a weak or high-pitched shrill cry, fewer than 6 wet nappies in 24 hours, blood in stool, vomiting that is green or projectile, refusal to feed, unusual floppiness or a bulging soft spot, or crying that continues inconsolably for more than 3 hours.
